As a natural, holistic mom, your journey into motherhood is guided by principles of sustainability, eco-friendliness, and health consciousness. When it comes to choosing baby essentials, you prioritize products that are gentle on your baby’s delicate skin, environmentally responsible, and free from harmful chemicals. In this guide, we’ll explore essential items that align with your values and support your holistic parenting approach.
Diapers and Wipes
- Diapers:
- Embrace the eco-friendly and cost-effective option of cloth diapers. They minimize waste and often use organic fabrics that are gentle on baby’s skin.
I wrote a previous article detailing the 411 on all things cloth diapering so be sure to check that out.
I didn’t start out using cloth diapers because it was inaccessible to me at the time that I had my baby. However, I did my best to still purchase high quality organic materials when using disposables.
While using disposables I really loved the brand Healthy Baby which is available at Target at the time of this writing.I also used the Honest brand when that was not available. The brand Dyper came highly recommended from the various mom groups that I was apart of but when I purchased it at Walmart, I did not like the feel of the material and the frequency of blowouts and leaks seemed to be more prevalent. However, this may have nothing to do with the brand Dyper themselves since I was in the literal infancy state of diapering my daughter.
- Water Wipes:
- I prefer wipes made with minimal ingredients, such as water wipes that are free from harsh chemicals and fragrances. They are gentle yet effective for sensitive skin.
I love water wipes specifically because they are biodegradable, plastic free and have simple minimal ingredients. They are more in price but I find I use less wipes than I did with other brands such as Huggies since they are bigger and seem to be more absorbent.
Feeding Essentials
- Baby Bottles & Pump:
- For the first few months of my daughter’s life I used the bottles that came with my pump (purchased through health insurance) and the bottles that came in my baby registry from Target. I am a first time mom and had no idea where to start. However, if I were to have another baby I would use glass bottles over plastic for feeding. They are free from harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates, ensuring your baby’s milk or formula remains pure.
I received my pump through insurance but have used all types both electronic and manual. I will write another article detailing breast pump 101 soon!
- Breastmilk Storage Bags:
Reusable Silicone Breastmilk Storage Bags: Reusable silicone breastmilk storage bags are a sustainable alternative to disposable options. Silicone bags are durable, freezer-safe, and free from harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates. They are easy to clean, can be sterilized for reuse, and reduce waste compared to single-use plastic bags. Choose bags with secure closures to prevent leaks and ensure freshness for stored breastmilk.
Biodegradable Breastmilk Storage Bags: If you prefer disposable options, look for biodegradable breastmilk storage bags made from plant-based materials. These bags are designed to break down naturally in landfill conditions, minimizing environmental impact compared to traditional plastic bags. Ensure they are BPA-free and meet safety standards for storing breastmilk safely.
Breastmilk Storage Bags through insurance: A part of sustainability for me is advocating for what works best for you at any point in time. I have the privilege now of being able to use reusable and biodegradable storage bag options but when I first started I received storage bags from insurance that were sent on a recurring basis.
Health and Wellness
- Natural Baby Skincare Products:
- When choosing skincare products think of natural ingredients like organic shea butter, coconut oil, and calendula. These soothe and protect your baby’s skin without synthetic additives.
- Nasal Aspirator:
- An essential tool for clearing nasal passages. I recommend choosing a bulb or manual aspirator that is easy to clean and reusable. It has come in clutch more than a handful of times.
Clothing and Accessories
- Cotton Clothing:
- My daughter’s first set of clothing were thrifted and gifts from friends. Still, I always read the labels to ensure it was 100% natural materials. While thrifting I only selected natural materials and when making my registry I only put items that fit within that metric. Natural materials are breathable and comfortable. It’s gentle on the skin and produced without harmful pesticides or dyes.
Whatever you do, stay away from polyester!
- Chemical-Free Laundry Detergent:
- I love to make my own detergent. However I don’t usually set time aside to make it. I don’t purchase baby specific detergent because I find it easier to wash my daughter’s clothing with everything else. All clear detergent is my go to because it came as a recommendation and is good with getting stains out. However, I will admit this is an area of my life that I can definitely improve.
- I recommend researching and finding a detergent that is free from synthetic fragrances, dyes, and harsh chemicals. Look for plant-based formulas that are gentle yet effective.
Playtime and Development
- Wooden Toys:
- Toys made from natural materials like wood are great because they are durable, non-toxic, and encourage imaginative play without harmful plastics.
- Teething Toys:
- Natural rubber teething toys are preferable. They are safe for chewing and free from BPA and phthalates.
On-the-Go Essentials
- Reusable Diaper Bag:
- I wasn’t particular as it concerned a diaper bag for my daughter. I often used bags I already had to store my daughter’s items but you may decide to opt for a diaper bag made from sustainable materials like organic cotton canvas or recycled materials. It’s practical and eco-friendly for carrying essentials on outings. You may also look to purchase something secondhand.
Safety and Comfort
- Non-Toxic Baby Car Seat:
- Ensure your baby’s car seat is free from harmful flame retardants and materials that off-gas VOCs. Look for options certified for low chemical emissions.
- Natural Baby Carrier:
- Carry your baby close with a carrier made from organic cotton or hemp. It’s comfortable, supportive, and promotes bonding without synthetic fabrics.
